José Carlos Caldeira is presently director of INESC Porto, one of the main research and technology transfer institutes in Portugal. He is also member of the MANUFUTURE High Level Group and Chairman of its National and Regional Technology Platforms Group (representing the Portuguese national initiative - FÓRUM MANUFUTURE Portugal). More recently, he became executive director of PRODUTECH – Pólo das Tecnologias de Produção – a cluster of more than 70 organizations targeting the development of production technologies for the manufacturing industry and Board member of EFFRA – European Factories of the Future Research Association (as observer). Since 2006, he is Board member of ISPIM – International Society for Professional Innovation Management.
In the last 20 years, he has participated as responsible and/or a collaborator in the preparation, development and execution of several R&D and innovation projects, in the Industrial Management and Automation area, which has been receiving national and international funding, comprising different companies and sectors like: metalworking, textile, footwear, wood and cork, injected foundry, food and beverage, etc.

The presentation addresses the need to ensure the innovation cycle coverage, to achieve economic and social impact from R&D investments. Using the work developed by the MANUFUTURE Platform, both at European and national/regional levels, and examples of actions already in place, the speech presents the main reasons supporting a better alignment between European, national and regional policies, programmes and projects and also the main current barriers and future challenges.
