Biography: 

H. FlegelStudies of  Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen, Germany,

specialization manufacturing engineering. In 1979 Heinrich Flegel received his Doctorate Degree in Applied Computer Science at TH Karlsruhe, Germany. He started his career in 1978 establishing CAD/CAM-application in tool and die design at the Sindelfingen plant of Daimler-Benz AG. In 1988 he was appointed Director of Machining Technology, in 1993 Director of Process Technology, and in 1996 Director of Manufacturing and Materials Technologies of Mercedes-Benz AG, before he took over his present assignment in 1998. Since 1991 lectures in Computer Science at Stuttgart University. Since 2003 Member of the Supervisory Board Daimler AG. In 2004 he was elected as Chairman of the Manufuture High Level Group. Sin 2007 he is President of the German Federation of Welding and related Processes (DVS).

If we want to achieve the recently published goals of EUROPE 2020, we need to strengthen research for industrial technologies, since we live on the proven economic performance of industry.  Innovation, making money out of research results, is only possible with industry. High value added and jobs must be the focus Grand Challenges can only be addressed by deploying a wide range of industrial Technologies, supporting innovation, jobs and clean growth. Last but not least, we need to develop a new sense of urgency and speed.
